Among my most treasured possessions: a box of photographs from my childhood.
Missing from the last 10 years of my life: anything beyond a small handful of printed photographs.
Yes. I have been tagged on Facebook in photographs friends have taken with cellphones. Sure. Lots of folks take snapshots of my family with their digital cameras. They press play, I see the photograph for a few bare seconds, then never again. Gone is the photograph onto a heap of digital virtual nonexistence.
Call me old fashioned. A little sentimental. But a beautifully crafted album or a perfectly framed print is invaluable. A digital file does not look like a printed piece. Prints are tactile. Their colors and depth are immensely richer and more beautiful.
I think you should grab a hammer, a few nails and a simple frame or two found at a yard sale. Use these tools to fill your homes with bits of your life and your love. Unlike anything else you might choose to adorn your walls, photographs of your children- your grandparents- your friends- your pets will never go out of fashion. These things will serve as the constant reminders of where you came from and who you are.
Let's be sentimental fools together, my friends. Let's print our photographs.
